Week 7 - Ushrayinee Sarker

In most cases it’s true that governments must sacrifice many things to ensure developmental change. Good economics and politics are just a few of the things that are usually removed from the agenda in these cases. But the government of Botswana handled their problems well, governing the country into a more stable place. The government put time and effort into a better infrastructure and better health, surprisingly not sacrificing either economic or politics in lieu of these things.

Besides the diamond industry, Botswana is doing well in terms of tourism, with their rich culture, scenic landscapes, and amazing wildlife. Unfortunately, the diamond industry is not an infinite fountain of money, as it is a resource that is finite. Most mineral based countries usually don’t do that well when their exports are diamonds as such for this reason, however Botswana is an exception, it seems. Given Botswana’s successful government, it is certain that Botswana will be able to find alternatives, such as more tourism opportunities and other exports.

Question: How stable is Botswana’s government? Will it last long enough and is it stable enough to continue growing as it is?
