Week 7-Kristina Ou

The government needs to sacrifice a lot of things in order to ensure development in their country. The article of Botswana success talks about the saying ‘good economics, bad politics’. This relates to how countries that focus on minerals for revenue tend to have a bad government. This leads to susceptibility for a corrupt government. Botswana has become successful in government because they have formed a trust with the citizens. In terms of how they faced economic decline, they focused on fiscal saving, surplus of account of the balance of payments, and investment of infrastructure and human capital.

In the second article, the government also focuses on tourism to increase revenue and ensure development. In Botswana, tourism is a large source of GDP which follows close behind diamonds as a large source of income. By focusing on tourism, the government can change an image shown towards a county and can lead to success both domestically and internationally. It can invite more people to come to the country through the way they advertise their country. The government sacrifices a lot of money and time to ensure that the tourism of the country s successful so that the country can be successful.

Question: If Botswana’s government is successful and not corrupt, why don’t other countries follow as well?
