Costa
Rica is sustains itself in an almost paradoxical manner. The country is largely
dependent on ecotourism, by tourists coming in interested in the wildlife and
culture of the area. In stark contrast however, to keep this very lifestyle alive,
Costa Rica also relies heavily on pesticides and such. These pesticides run into
the local water supplies and cause major issues.
There
is also the issue of ‘greenwashing,’ in which companies claim to be
eco-friendly and make profits off the fact that they really are not.
The
most valuable aspect of Davis is the openness to entrepreneurial change in
college towns like Davis. One recent entrepreneurial change that has swept
through Davis is Joyrun. It’s a food delivery app where the food is delivered
by students, to students, creating a small self-reliant community based around
a common interest- good and readily available food. The company took a couple
of months to really get off the ground and is now making major revenue, with
some runners making $100+ a day.
It’s
this easily found interest that Davis studnets have that Femme Fam can use to
really take a hold and get somewhere. We can try to not overuse this value by
not overwhelming students with an overbearing system of operations. Femme Fam
must be approachable and easily applicable to all, which it is, luckily.
Question:
How can Costa Rica’s reliance of pesticides be corrected?
