Week 3 Brett Monji

One Country that truly had a chance to start fresh and “make” itself is the United States.  Being a country without any historical or strong cultural ties to traditions, it was able to make an image for itself from the ground up.  It started as a Country built around inclusivity and equal representation under the law.  However, it can do more to protect citizen’s rights and not exclude any immigrants to maximize its national aesthetic as a free immigrant country.  Japan is a country that has a strong government influence on its national aesthetic.  Japan is highly specialized in an efficient tech based homogenous society.  The government makes sure that it stays homogenous by having some of the hardest naturalization laws in the world.  The government also works closely with the US to make sure it is on parr with the latest technological advancements.  Lastly, the infrastructure created by the government allows for fast and precisely timed public transit enabling the Japanese citizens to plan their day down to the minute.

The readings show that France modeled itself to become a paragon of style. This ties back to national aesthetics because it combines the vision of the government with the descriptions of France from the people to the industries making sure France fit the bill.  My main question is would a top down approach work today in a Democratic society?  With no powerful central leader to impose their will upon the people I find it hard to think that a country can achieve the unity that it did in the times of Emperors and Kings.
