Social Entrepreneurship is essentially a “unique approach to economic and social problems”. It is supposed to serve and improve the lives of people. Social entrepreneurs operate in cross-disciplinary and sector approach meaning they draw ideas, groups, and methods to collectively and innovatively solve, mitigate and bring awareness to issues in society. They are basically following a start up model that requires the involvement of the government, industry, and people, pushing forth the boundaries on how to manage the country. However, because social entrepreneurs work for and speak to people at first hand, they produce direct effects to the people of the country (infrastructure, healthcare, education, etc). In practice, these companies scout for their resources (industry) to provide such resources or services. They also work with national or local governments for them to invest in their missions. This approach is similar to Japan’s ODA, believing to create better relationships with their neighboring countries by offering loans purposeful for improving infrastructures. Their mission was to fill a gap which was Japan’s passivity in the international level.
The rap star Akon disappeared for awhile in the American mainstream as he partnered up with his entrepreneur friends to light up Senegal’s countryside using solar power (also now expanding to other parts of Africa). The has generated jobs and they were outreached by Jiangsu, China was interested in Akon’s solar project and now have signed an agreement to initiate it in Jiangsu.
Is social entrepreneurship changing the realm of business? If so how?
