Week 8 Kenrick Chiang

This week’s reading focused heavily on the rebranding of Costa Rica. The articles mention how Costa Rica has become a country of ecotourism. Many people travel to Central America and Costa Rica in order to observe the nature and life of Costa Rican culture. However, in order to keep this life lifestyle of ecotourism alive, Costa Rica relies heavily on pesticides and chemicals to keep different plants alive. It is mentioned that these pesticides can affect banana production which is an export that Costa Rica is known for. In order to effectively keep their own nation brand alive, it seems that Costa Rica has to get the help of other nations in order to do so. To also keep its own nation branding alive and attract tourists, it seems like Costa Rica needs to endure some form of sacrifice in order to keep itself known. In this case, it would be the toxic pesticides that are used to keep tropical ecosystems alive in exchange for the dangers that follow it including mortality rate of animals and affecting agriculture. Costa Rica also utilizes the use of entrepreneurs that are looking to start up small businesses in Costa Rica. This allows people to use the idea of ecotourism because entrepreneurs overseas are able to utilize their resources.
This can be seen within the country of interest because China is known for tourism and the production of many items we see and use in the United States. In turn, they are also known to have some of the worst pollution in the world. The pollution is so bad that it affects not only the health of citizens, but the health of tourists as well. With China’s high amount of industry and factories, we can see how China was able to give itself its own nation brand, but also negatively impact the lives of its inhabitants as well. Entrepreneurs all over the world also come to China to do business and start up companies. Many people in the United States travel to China in order to do business and utilize the resources that are handed to them there as well.

Question: Are there people like entrepreneurs that travel to every country in hopes of starting up a business or is there a specific group of countries that people mainly go to.
