Vietnam as a country is still suffering from old wounds. The Vietnam War took a large toll on the country in many ways that are not widely known. Agent Orange was essentially chemical warfare that the United States did during the war from 1961-1971. This event has devastated the Vietnamese people for decades including affecting their descendents. According to “Agent Orange: Terrible Legacy of Vietnam” by Marjorie Cohn the United States sprayed the deadly toxin “dioxin” caused cancers and disorders on those directly affected and the children of those affected would suffer from deformities and shorter lifespans. Furthermore, Agent Orange affected the environment like the forest and water supplies that may be permanent. This makes it difficult to have an economy based on the nation’s natural resources and forces the vietnamese people to seek life elsewhere. Creating a refugee culture and national aesthetic.
Vietnam should focus on what resources they have and create a high class export that is already making its way internationally. Demand payment from the United States for its atrocities and use that capital for a new economy. Agent Orange unfortunately happened but there must be compensation for the damages committed.
How much of vietnam is permanently damaged by Agent Orange?
