The TPP is the
largest trade deal in history — involving countries stretching from Chile to
Japan, representing 792 million people and accounting for 40 percent of the
world economy, yet many are not even aware the effects of the trade agreement.
The TPP is a
death wish in a global race to the bottom, giving large corporations and Wall
Street banks a way to eliminate any and all laws and regulations that get in
the way of their profits.
Many
critiques of the TPP don’t agree with outsourcing US jobs. The TPP will
continue to undermine unions while supporting corporations. The TPP in sum, is
a symbol of the United States desire to control. An example of this is the Nike
connection. In Gurtov’s article: The
Trans-Pacific Partnership: A Deeply Flawed Partnership, Gustov writes, “Supporting
Nike’s promise, a White House spokesperson insists that the TPP includes the
strongest, boldest human rights protections, labor protections, and
environmental protections we’ve seen in a trade deal.” This doesn’t make any
sense because in factories across the globe, there are little to no labor laws
or rights that directly support the workers.
Questions
1. How does this effect Vietnam?
