Kurt Romero: Week 5 Blog

In the reading, “Transnationalization of Korean Popular Culture and the Rise of ‘Pop Nationalism’ in Korea”, author Jeongsuk Joo explains how the entertainment business has improved the country’s economy and its culture. The business has gone worldwide and it is known to be Korea’s national aesthetics. The Korean Wave as the author mentions is the huge influence brought to other countries whether it is movie films or the music industry. Jeongsuk talks about “the Korean singer, BoA, who debuted in Japan in 2001...has topped Japan’s Oricon pop music charts”. Another huge artist PSY has made a similar achievement in 2012 having his music video Gangnam Style the top most viewed on YouTube. I am sure most people have gone through the phase of listening to Kpop and watching Korean dramas. This is the Korean Wave that the author was talking about. People do not even have to like it for the Korean Wave to spread. For me, that phase was back in high school and today I am not into that type of culture anymore. I believe that the reason why I stopped was because my friends would tell me how there are new guy/girl groups being made almost every month.

Question: Korean pop culture was influenced from Western ideas, however, it has become more popular than any other country. Will countries eventually mimic or be influenced by the Korean pop culture such as the music industry?
