Week 3 - Japan - William Chan

The national aesthetic of Japan was heavily affected by America in both aspects of politics and fashion. After WWII, Japan had multiple strategies in rebuilding their nation. In the article, How American Style Fueled Postwar Youth Fashion in Japan, by Chantal Fernandez, Fernandez brings up a cross cultural idea of how the fashion industry was affected heavily by both Japan and American influences. For the Japanese style, it was brought up that the style was based on 'tailored' clothing which brings in mind quality clothing. The influence that America brought to the table when the designer Kensuke Ishizu visited America was that Ishizu seen the 'Ivy league' style and realized that this style would of been trendy and effective to use in his fashion industry back in Japan. The brand "Take Ivy" made a huge impact in Japanese culture as well as Japan's Aesthetic because it was able to make a impact in their culture as a whole due to the impact they had from the fashion. It was able to bring Japan together as well as import clothing into America.

Question: Is it possible for any country to uphold their own national aesthetic without help from other countries ?
