Kurt Romero: Week 8 Blog

As mentioned in class, Vietnam is a country that is redeveloping and was heavily influenced by many countries such as China, United States, and France. The Trans-Pacific Partnership allows Vietnam to further its developments by receiving foreign aid from other countries. The TPP seems to be a great organization that creates trade agreements between countries. However, in the reading by Mel Gurtov, it has flaws in the partnerships. It promotes the “interests of trading and investment firms” rather than “fighting to protect our natural environments”. Because of the TPP caring more of its products and shipments, it allowed products such as Agent Orange to damage and affect the country. It is an organization that does not consider the importance of the environment and the people, but the profits they receive. The TPP also created cheap labor that is not known to the world such as shoe industries as Nike. They try to take advantage of the partnerships and maximize their profits by having them work in terrible work conditions and low wages. Countries do not expose these actions because we live in a capitalist world and the demands for these products are high.

Question: Do countries such as Vietnam know that the TPP are benefiting more than them?
