Week7 -- Ralph Imatong

Transnational Education in Vietnam

Vietnam's economy has been ascending in the global scene. In class discussions, Vietnam is now considered middle poor, an upgrade from low poor level. This means that the country is progressing economically and yearns to have a place in the international stage. In the article by George Nguyen and Anna Shillabeer, "Issues in Transnational Higher Education Regulation in Vietnam," I understand the need for the country to seek a quality transnational higher education in Vietnam. Because of Vietnam's economic progress and their understanding of the importance of western market, it is only right that the Vietnamese have a quality transnational higher education to be competitive in the international market. However, the government is having difficulty in regulating and maintaining sustainable trading environment for international schools which could potentially result to students not have the promised quality education and produce a possible workforce with no qualifications to compete in the international market. In addition, having international schools in the host country could also potentially jeopardize the Vietnamese culture. In the article, it seems that the most common problem for the government is making sure that infrastructure and faculty commitments are adequate and met. I think that in addition to this, the government should regulate cultural exchange for the students as it might jeopardize students' cultural identity.

In this video, it seems that Vietnam shares the same problem with other countries with regulating their transnational higher education. In here, it is revealed that transnational higher education is a sensitive market, thus it is important that a government, in this case, the Vietnamese government, make efforts to regulate and comply to its regulation. Otherwise, the Vietnamese government will do a disservice to its people for not providing a quality education.

How will the Vietnamese government balance the cultural exchange of international schools in their country? How is Vietnam's model of regulation beneficial in the long run?
