Week 4 - Diane Tran

I think it is fascinating how different countries can influence others in fashion, cars, makeup, etc. For example, the country Japan influenced America's fashion and vice versa. There would be Japanese men's fashion that propelled forward into America's influences. Marx described, "It was always shocking to me that a Japanese brand could capture the American imagination, but I think Evisu in the 90's, with the jeans with the white seagull, and then the A Bathing Ape in the 2000s proved the point that Japanese brands could really become a driving force in Western pop culture" (Fernandez, 2). Even today, A Bathing Ape is a fashion item that is super popular and desired amongst the American younger population. The prices for these items could go for $400 and even higher if it was limited edition.

In addition, Uniqlo is another brand that was thrust forward towards America from Japan. Marx said, " I think Uniqlo is a product of history of Japanese fashion but also very different... Van Jacket was the first brand to bring American style to Japan" (Fernandez, 4). I have seen Uniqlo back in the malls of San Jose. It is so interesting to realize that Japan can play an influence toward everyday fashion in America. For instance, my friends and family wear clothing from Uniqlo. The clothing from Uniqlo seems to be very popular because it is the plan by 2020 to make $10 billion in sales in the United States.

Countries such as Japan expanded its consumers to different countries and do really well. Is this because the quality of Japan's clothing is better? Is it the fashion trends that are different become popular?
