Week4- Vivianne Lee

As a Japanese American, it is interesting to learn how the American culture influenced the fashion trends in Japan after World War II and how the country first remade it self. Rebuilding of Japan first started with the Yoshida Doctrine which was created during Postwar Japan. This doctrine was displayed as a grand strategy, which aimed at advancing Japan’s economic development while keeping security commitments to the lowest level. The Yoshida doctrine grand strategy over succeeded and transformed Japan into the economic powerhouse that it is today. However, the changes of security and political environments that arose from the post-Cold War era challenged the Yoshida Doctrine as the newly Koizumi Doctrine arose. This new grand strategy is concerned with achieving structural power, preserving national tranquility, and maintaining Japan’s economic competitiveness. The shift from the Yoshida Doctrine to the Koizumi Doctrine is a “manifestation of Japan’s aspirations and perception of vulnerabilities in the context of domestic and international developments” (Siew Man, pg 2). The Koizumi doctrine elaborates on the shortcomings of the previous grand strategy, and responds to present and future challenges in Japan. The Yoshida doctrine puts national development and growth above all other considerations, the new doctrine takes a cooperative approach amongst Japan’s people, introducing the idea of “acting together, advancing together” (Siew Man, pg. 17). The Yoshida Doctrine was an “effective blueprint” to rebuild a war-torn Japan (Siew Man, pg. 4). Compared to the Koizumi doctrine which could be displayed as the final project. If there’s a stronger focus on the Koizumi doctrine this grand strategy can reach maximum status as it has a firm eye on the future of Japan. I have visited Japan many times over the summer, and I see people all the time incorporating American fashion trends with their outfits, such as wearing high waisted jeans and wearing American brands such as Abercrombie and Fitch and Hollister. A world wide store known as UNIQLO is an example of a Japanese clothing store that mainly focuses on incorporating American fashion trends. UNIQLO is now located in many different countries such as Los Angeles and New York. Customers now not only include the Japanese people, but also Americans.
